Under the dancing curtains of the aurora borealis, the mysterious Mossy Frog emerges from hiding. Its body, covered in bumps and ridges like ancient moss, makes it the ultimate camouflage artist โ until it's time to strike!
Fascinating facts about the Vietnamese mossy frog
The Vietnamese mossy frog (Theloderma corticale) has one of nature's most extraordinary camouflages. Its skin is covered in warts, ridges, and irregular bumps that perfectly mimic moss growing on rocks โ it's nearly impossible to spot.
These frogs are skilled ventriloquists! Their calls can be thrown to seem like they come from a different location, confusing both predators and scientists trying to locate them. They're almost never spotted by call alone.
Mossy frogs live in rocky mountain streams and caves in northern Vietnam. They're excellent swimmers and often float on the water surface, looking exactly like floating clumps of vegetation.
They breed in small rock pools inside caves or on cave ceilings above water. Eggs are laid on cave walls or ceilings, and when tadpoles hatch, they drop into the water below to continue developing.
